John Harrison VC, MC (12 November 1890 - 17 April 1917) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross, the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces.
On 3 May 1917 at Oppy, France, owing to darkness, to smoke from the enemy barrage and our own, and to the fact that the objective was in a dark wood, it was impossible to see when our barrage had lifted off the enemy front line.
A fund was raised in Hull to provide for young John’s education and he went on to serve as an officer in the 2d World War, he was killed in the defence of Dunkirk and is buried in the Dunkirk town cemetery.
