Country Standard Time: CD Review John Hartford
Hartford, probably best known as the author of Glen Campbell's "Gentle on my Mind," shunned benchmark high-harmonies and the often dreary, stiff lyrics of the day and created tunes like "Emanuel Cant" and "Dig a Hole." Yet, Aereoplane offered up several dandy instrumentals and traditional numbers during their short time together.
A pioneering musician who employed a broad palette of American music to fuel his idiosyncratic observations, the late John Hartford created a genre, a style all his own: a sort of modern old-tyme, pre-war, post-punk mŽlange that is was as influential as it was refreshing.
The breezy locomotion of that tune is echoed faintly in the title track to this collection of all new originals, and Hartford is so obviously at ease with the material and his fellow players that it takes a lot less than the song's 6 1/2 minutes for the listener to be drawn in.
