Neither did I. When you encounter John Hartson away from the football field, you can't help but be taken in by the reputation that he's earned over the course of 530 senior games, over 200 goals and a few appearances in front of various disciplinary committees.
Hartson's disciplinary record is nowhere near the way it's been caricatured over the years, but mud sticks.
Although John enjoyed a brief spell working under Arsene Wenger, with Arsenal being recast in a Gallic light, when West Ham came in to secure Hartson's services in exchange for a handsome cheque, Wenger allowed him to move on to Upton Park, beginning a golden period in his career.

With Hartson’s previous deal due to expire in the summer, the question of his immediate future seemed to be raised somewhere in the media every day for the past few weeks.
Given Hartson’s proneness to injury - and the speed with which he loses condition through inactivity - over the three-and-a-half years he has been with the club, the manager was clearly doubtful about the wisdom of offering an extension of more than one year.
Hartson’s protracted negotiations, however, highlight a problem for O’Neill in these times of economic recession, one which was underlined by Lawwell, when he responded to the manager’s comment that the board of directors had "supported the deal [for Hartson] throughout".
