	JOHN HASSALL, RI RMS (1868-1948)
		John Hassall was born in Walmer, Kent on 21 May 1868 and educated in Worthing, at Newton Abbot College and at Neuenheim College, Heidelberg.
		In 1901, Hassall was elected to the membership of both the Royal Institute of Painters in Water-Colour and the Royal Society of Miniature Painters.
		In 1900, Hassall opened his own New Art School and School of Poster Design in Kensington, with the help of his former teacher Van Havermaet; he numbered Bert Thomas, H M Bateman and Harry Rountree among his students.

		John Hassall (born 17 February 1981, London}, was the bassist with punk/garage rock revivalists The Libertines.
		Hassall was inspired to play music when he rummaged through his parent's record collection and found a copy of the The Beatles' Revolver.
		John himself has stated that he prefers playing the bass to the guitar as he finds it to be a more "meaty" instrument.

		Hassall's father had served in the fleet at the siege of Sevastapol, and was paralysed as the result of an accident on board ship; he died at the age of thirty-eight.
		Hassall agreed with his friends, and a few days later he was on his way back to England with the intention of doing for a living, that which he had previously done for amusement.

		John Hassall was one of our most famous poster artists and yet there is an irony; not that he died a poor man, but that his name is none too familiar with the present generation.
		Hassall completely understood poster work and its demands, yet his method of working was quite spontaneous, never using a model, other than to ask someone to hold their arm up for a minute.
		Several old copper kettles were tenderly patched with brown paper where they leaked- Hassall theorised that the kettles developed a personality and to throw them away would hurt their feelings.
