War at Sea in the Middle Ages and Renaissance (Book Review)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
In his introductory chapter John Hattendorf takes on the argument whether A.T.Mahan's theories of naval supremacy and the control of the seas, based on the navies of France and England from the second half of the seventeenth century to his own day, have any relevance to earlier periods.
Hattendorf's analysis of Mahan's approach is valuable in itself but one is not surprised to find that Mahan's views have little applicability to an era where it is hard to find any 'European great-power navies.'
John H.Pryor's essay on Byzantium and the sea is particularly valuable.

Those who specialize in one form of warfare or spend their careers in science, technology, education, and logistics offer modern sailors models of inspiration and devotion to their profession no less valuable than those of fleet commanders.
There are even heroes for naval historians: Sir John Knox Laughton, Sir Julian Corbett, Sir Herbert Richmond, and Captain Stephen Roskill of Britain, alongside the Americans Alfred Thayer Mahan, Robert G. Albion, and Samuel Eliot Morison.
The professional naval audience has a particular practical interest in maritime history in the context of recruiting: inculcating and maintaining service pride and tradition during the indoctrination and initial training and education of enlisted recruits, midshipmen, and officer candidates.

UBI SUMUS REVISITED: THE STATE OF MARITIME AND NAVAL MUSEUMS 2004
Edited by John Hattendorf, the Ernest J. King Professor of Maritime History and Chairman of the Maritime History Department at the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, the book is a series of articles by international scholars reflecting on the state of naval and maritime history throughout the world.
The subject, as John Hattendorf wrote, "is not a closed category of human activity." Maritime and naval museums may do well t\by being less isolationist and thus more broad, more relevant, and more nationally significant in the subjects conveyed through exhibitions and programs.
We must begin to be seen by the public as relevant, and that relevancy is not merely an appreciation of the past but a basis to grasp and confront the issues that face us in the present and in the future.
