  John Newton | Retro Junk
John Haymes Newton was a late Christmas present for his parents, born on December 29, 1965 in Chapel Hill, NC.
Newton graduated from Chapel Hill High School in June of 1984, and enrolled at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill that fall, where he became active in the theater.
The Salkinds chose to release Newton from his contract and quickly hired Gerard Christopher to replace him as Superboy for the second season assuming that it was the costume, and not the actor that wore the cape, that attracted viewers.

While at Juilliard, he became friends with Robin Williams, as well as with Kevin Conroy (who would later be the voice actor for the animated Batman television series).

His last theatrical film was director John Carpenter's 1995 remake of Village of the Damned, where he played the local everyman doctor protagonist trying to save the town from the demonic children, the leader of whom was his "daughter".

Clark Kent (John Haymes Newton, Desperate Housewives), his childhood friend Lana Lang (Stacy Haiduk, SeaQuest DSV), and their pal T.J. White (James Calvert, House) are students at Shuster University, where they spend their free hours writing for the school paper, the Shuster Herald.
The blue-screen flying effects are little too obviously blue screen, John Haymes Newton seems uncomfortable in the Superboy suit, and the other actors are still getting a handle on their characters.
But beyond that, Newton adopts a different set of mannerisms for both characters, without resorting to anything silly like changing his voice, so you almost believe his character's two halves could be two people.

Filmed at the Disney/MGM Studios in Orlando, the first season of the half-hour series offered hunky John Haymes Newton, 22 (cast because of a resemblance to Christopher Reeve), as the Shuster University Journalism student/Superhero, with wholesomely sexy Stacy Haiduk, 20 (Newton's offscreen girlfriend) as his friend (who could be more), Lana Lang.
Newton, while lacking the smoldering sex appeal of Tom Welling, is very likable, and is far closer in age and personality to the character he portrays than either Welling, or Gerard Christopher (who would assume the role in Season Two of "Superboy").

 Superman Tidbits
John Haymes Newton was the original Superboy for the 1988-89 season, but was reportedly fired from the series and replaced in 1989 by Gerard Christopher, at that time a leading name for the next Superman film.
With Viacom as the series distributor, as well as the syndicated distributor of "Superman IV", the series had essentially become shoehorned to the films with Lex Luthor having facial surgery to look older - supposedly so by the time of "Superman IV" there was an extended history between Superman and Luthor.
One project, entitled "Young Superman", would have starred the first Superboy, John Haymes Newton, but was ultimately scrapped in 1989 when he was replaced on the series by Gerard Christopher.
