 The Lewis Walpole Library: The Library and Its History
On a trip to London in 1923, Lewis bought a copy of John Heneage Jesse’s George Selwyn and His Contemporaries that was full of manuscript notes by Lady Louisa Stuart.
Lewis and his wife, Annie Burr Lewis, left their collection, house, and grounds to Yale to be known as the Lewis Walpole Library or, as he referred to it unofficially, Yale in Farmington.
Included in the household collection is John Vanderlyn's so-called "Nag's Head" portrait of Theodosia Burr Alston, daughter of Vice-President Aaron Burr.

One of these books may have been John Heneage Jesse’s London: Its Celebrated Characters and Remarkable Places (3 vols., 1871), the flyleaf of which Clemens signed in London in 1873 (Huntington Library, San Marino).
John S. Phillips of McClure, Phillips and Company wrote to Clemens on 14 April 1905: "We sent you a little while ago a copy of ‘The Troll Garden’ by Miss Willa Sibert Cather.
Some books—like James Mark Baldwin’s The Story of the Mind (1899) and a work by the American humorist Henry Clay Lukens ("Erratic Enrique"), Jets and Flashes (1883)—interested Clemens initially, but later were among the hundreds of volumes he donated to the Mark Twain Library at Redding in 1908.

EDWARD JESSE (1780-1868), English writer on natural history, was born on the 14th of January 1780, at Hutton Cranswick, Yorkshire, where his father was vicar of the parish.
He became clerk in a government office in 1798, and for a time was secretary to Lord Dartmouth, when president of the Board of Control.

First edition of the clothbound issue of the catalogue, with a long prefatory essay by E.M. Benson, accompanied by issue I:4 of the Bulletin, devoted to material supplementing the catalogue, including a long essay by Loren Mozley.
First separate printing of this poem by the American painter, published under the auspices of the then current incarnation of his long primary gallery association.
The typescript bears some rudimentary layout and design annotations, so it is clear that the project reached some mid-state, but the crossing out of Morley’s final comment in his introductory note ("I believe it has never before been printed") suggests it may have been abandoned.
