John Henry (album) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Henry is the name of They Might Be Giants' fifth original album, although it is the sixth disc in their discography.
It is the first album in which John Linnell and John Flansburgh utilized a full band, as opposed to playing most or all of the instruments themselves.
The album's name, a reference to the man vs. machine fable of John Henry, is roughly an allusion to the band's fundamental switch to more conventional instrumentation, especially the newly-established use of a human drummer instead of a drum machine.

Guy Johnson, in his definitive 1928 study, calls John Henry "the Negro's greatest folk character." Which is why the facts of John Henry's literal life - as a fl man trying to work his way through a "reconstructed" South - are only incidental to the countless versions of his story passed down over a century.

Bruce Springsteen lyrics - JOHN HENRY
John Henry and men like him were driving holes in the faces of mountains into which explosive charges would be placed, as the railroads blasted locomotive tunnels.
John Henry met this challenge by offering to race the drill, to see which of them could open a deeper hole in the mountain in a given period of time.
Since John Henry is understood to be a fl man--menial occupations on the railroad were racially distributed--it is a story about the strength and courage of the African-American people.

John Henry sounds as good as any TMBG effort, but on inspection, I think it also proves to be one of their deepest and most cohesive albums.
The sound is also vaguely more "metal" than the sort of candy-coated synthesizers and horns that characterized their earlier albums (not that there's any absence of horns), from the rough-edged accordion opening of Subliminal to the grungy guitars on Sleeping In The Flowers and others.

CD review: "Lightnin', Joel & John Henry"
Lightnin' insisted the three brothers record together, so Strachwitz set up his portable tape recorder while the three musicians entertained themselves and their mother in John Henry's rather primitive shack (the photograph on the sleeve proves this description is no mere romanticization).
Joel plays in the traditional country style of Blind Lemon Jefferson, with whom he once lived, while John Henry's music is a vibrant, rough and rambling music, depending more on force of delivery and charisma than precision or technique.
Lightnin', as he was wont to do, improvised much of the material on the spot, such as the lead tune, "See About My Brother John Henry," which Strachwitz believes was made up right then, as he also believes was "I Got a Brother in Waxahachie" (the town where Lightnin' had finally tracked down John Henry).

I like this album because it shows the influence of grunge on a few tracks while also staying true to the stylistic flipping from song to song that they are known for.
This album establishes beyond a doubt that TMBG are among the most gifted songwriters in rock history.
The sound is also vaguely more _metal_ than the sort of candy-coated synthesizers and horns that characterized their earlier albums (not that there's any absence of horns), from the rough-edged harmonica opening of Subliminal to the grungy guitars on Sleeping In The Flowers and others.

 John Henry Music
Even with the addition of bass, drums, sax, and trumpet, the focus is still on the goofy vocals, silly lyrical puns, and accordion-driven hooks of John Flansburgh and John Linnell, and that is not a good thing.
The only problem with this album is that it is their longest and features the most amount of songs that are longer than their trademark of under 3 minutes, even 2 minutes.
Myself and my fellow TMBG fans derided it as a "teen angst album," moaned and whined that John and John had betrayed us by adding a band, and generally refused to give it a chance.
