Herkimer is situated in a rich dairying region, and has various manufactures.
In the War of Independence General Herkimer assembled here the force which on the 6th of August 1777 was ambushed near Oriskany on its march from Ft. Dayton to the relief of Ft. Schuyler (see ORISKANY); and the settlement was attacked by Indians and Tories in September 1778 and in June 1782.
The township of Herkimer was organized in 1788, and in 1807 the village was incorporated.

Nicholas Herkimer (about 1728-1777) was a militia general in the American Revolutionary War, who died of wounds after the Battle of Oriskany.
Herkimer's horse was shot, and he was seriously wounded.
Herkimer County, New York was named in his honor.

 Herkimer County in the War of 1812
The Herkimer county militia responded promptly to the calls for troops to defend the frontier, and were noted for their valor and patriotic zeal, submitting, without complaint, to the various privations incident to the march and camp.
Records on file in the adjutant-general's office at Albany show that subsequent to the year 1859 upward of two hundred and thirty men from Herkimer county presented claims to the State for having furnished their own equipments, clothing, etc., in the war of 1812, and such claims were allowed.
In the three cemeteries in the village of Herkimer, viz., Oak Hill, the Reformed Church Cemetery and the new one, are the graves of many.

Joseph Lester Herkimer was born in 1775 and Margaretha in 1777.
Herkimer grew the grain, ran the mill that ground the grain, owned the boats that transported the grain, and paid the men who helped do all these jobs, with presumably a profit for himself on all these ventures.
The Herkimers were listed on the Hunter Lists of 4 October and 31 December 1710 as well as that of 24 June 1711 as living at East Camp, not far from the other communities on the east side of the Hudson River (presently Germantown), and the three towns on the west side.

Sir John Johnson, son of Sir William Johnson and founder of the Royal or Johnson's Greens, inherited his father's estate of 200,000 acres and his Indian Superintendent commission in 1774 upon his father's death.
Nicholas Herkimer, a wealthy trader and owner of 2,000 acres, chose to defend the Rebel cause.
In 1776 Nicholas Herkimer was made a Brigadier General in the New York State militia and charged with defending the state against Torys and Indians.

John was the first white settler there (village known as Cook House) He came up the Delaware river in a canoe with family to Carpenter's Point (now Point Jarvis).
The first permanent settler in the place was John Hulce, who came in the spring of 1789 from Orange Co., and located on the west bank of the river, at the northerly end of the present village.
Joseph Hulce, a brother of John came with him, and the two located Lots 43,44 and 45, Evans Patent, but not being able to secure title to Lot 43,Joseph, after a few years returned to Orange Co. John Hulce was a religious man, a Presbyterian, and his wife a Baptist.

John Jacob Thorp was a member of the Little Falls lodge of Free and Accepted Masons for over 50 years, and was given his 50-year Masonic jewels in June 1924 at his home by a committee from the lodge.

JOHN JAY, a member of the Continental Congress (1774-1776, 1778-1779), was President of the Continental Congress from December 10, 1778 to September 28, 1779.
