 Pair of Chinese Blue-and-White Chargers
Description: These two large pieces are the same size and clearly share a common origin, as their pastes and glazes match.
“Hawthorn’-decorated blue-and-white ware, usually in the forms of chargers and ‘ginger-jars’, was highly popular in England in the 18th century and still fetches high prices for good pieces— John Hervey, 1st Earl of Bristol bought several pieces “for my dear wife” — and it shows to advantage in almost any surroundings.
One of the chargers has two small chips in its rim, which could easily be restored, if it is felt that they detract from the beauty of the pair - the ‘bursts’ where the glaze has shrunk, leaving brown spots, are typical firing flaws but were not regarded as justifying rejection.
