Hiatt began his solo career in 1974, and over the next decade he ran through a number of different styles from rock & roll to new wave pop before he finally settled on a rootsy fusion of rock & roll, country, blues, and folk with his 1987 album Bring the Family.
Hiatt's final attempt at recording the follow-up to Bring the Family was orchestrated by veteran producer Glyn Johns, who had him record with his touring band, the Goners.
John Hiatt has often wavered back and forth between his instincts as a rocker and a more measured singer/songwriter bent, and after the rowdy guitar-fueled blues-rock of 2003's Beneath This Gruff...

Master of Disaster, John Hiatt’s brilliant new CD, simultaneously celebrates and updates rock ‘n’ roll in a manner that won’t be particularly surprising to any child of the ‘50s.
Hiatt journeyed to Memphis for this recording, joining forces with the venerable producer and impresario Jim Dickinson and his sons Cody and Luther, who comprise two thirds of the radical roots-blues/rockers the North Mississippi Allstars.
Then Hiatt began gaining equal notoriety as a performer, particularly a stint where he served as America’s answer to the angry Brits of the late ‘70s, plus some time working with Ry Cooder.

HYBRIDMAGAZINE.COM | REVIEWS | JOHN HIATT - CROSSING MUDDY WATERS
John Hiatt is known for his blues-rock styling, but on this album he throws aside the electric guitars and bellies up to the bluegrass and country bar, and he does it with class and truth.
John weaves a truly fine gospel song in "Lift Up Every Stone." This is a song that could be sung just as easily in the cotton fields as in the country bar on the corner.
Hiatt has assembled a cast of bluegrass and country players that enhance each moment of each song on this album.

John Hiatt in Memphis: Roots Rocker Records to New Sonoma-24
Hiatt has known Dickinson's sons from the time they were young kids absorbing their dad's deep love for the expressive intersections of Delta Southern culture and music, and watched them playing punk rock and jug band music and ultimately evolving into superb players with their own critically acclaimed band, the North Mississippi Allstars.
To achieve that sonic vision, Dickinson, Hiatt and engineer/mixer John Hampton took advantage of an opportunity for the album to become the debut session using the first “real-world” multitrack DSD (Direct Stream Digital) recorder, the Sonoma 24, which was developed by Gus Skinas.
Hiatt has quite an impressive body of work, and Master of Disaster ranks with his finest albums, but sonically, none of his albums come close to this.

 Rarebird's John Hiatt Reviews
Hiatt is highly revered by his fellow musicians; his music crosses several genres (rock, country, blues, and others) and numerous artists from all of those genres have covered his songs.
Hiatt has paid plenty of dues; if he wants to have occasional fun with a superficially enjoyable album such as Little Head, he can surely be forgiven.
Hiatt's compositions also come in the forms of a gentle duet between Bonnie Raitt and Don Henley (neither of whom are strangers to singing Hiatt's songs); a modern r&b number from Krystal Harris; and a semi-slick country-pop tune from Jennifer Paige.

Even John Hiatt's most ardent fans weren't ready for this masterpiece to be dropped in their laps in 1987.
Hiatt had spent most of the 70's and 80's playing pick-a-style, bouncing from southern country rock to Elvis Costello redux and back again.
Hiatt's sober, uncompromising examination of his previously drunken life was breathtaking; producing instant classics in "Have a Little Faith in Me" and "Thing Called Love." Family remains a landmark of adult album rock.

Whatever Hiatt's secret, we can all rejoice in the fact that THE TIKI BAR IS OPEN offers another batch of fine songs, sung in that patented sandpaper-soul voice.
Hiatt's crack band, including guitar ace Sonny Landreth, chugs along spiritedly, supporting an amalgam of rock, country, blues, and R&B distinguished by Hiatt's plainspoken-but-trenchant lyrics.

The change of scenery appears to have done him a world of good, because this is the loosest he's sounded in a long time.
Crossing Muddy Waters is a mostly acoustic affair with previous Hiatt collaborators Davey Faragher of Cracker (bass, percussion, harmonies) and David Immergluck of Counting Crows (mandolins, slide guitar, harmonies) along for the ride.
But Hiatt is at his best on tracks like the gospel-influenced "Lift Up Every Stone," which adds some nasty electric guitar to the mix as he testifies about a murder in a secretive small town.
