The award is named for John Paul (J.P.) Mees, who passed away during the 2000 spring semester while serving as vice president of planning and policy/executive assistant to the president.
Hicklin, a Central alumnus, said he was pleased to receive the award named after his friend and colleague.
Hicklin has been recognized for his many innovative retention programs, and in 1992 he received a Noel Levitz National Award for a retention program he designed and implemented.

By way of reply, Hicklin at once rushed for a carbine standing in the corner, while Perry, drawing his revolver, quietly stepped outside the cabin, and waited for his antagonist.
Hicklin threw up his arms, staggered off a few paces, sank down upon his knees, fell forward on his face, gasped once or twice, rolled over and was dead.
