Hieftje's proposal, which he announced earlier this month, would use part of Ann Arbor's parks acquisition millage to buy land and development rights in parts of eight townships around the city.
Under Hieftje's plan, city voters would replace the existing 0.5-mill parks acquisition millage, due to expire next year, with a new 0.5-mill tax for 30 years and also allow the city to buy development rights, another means of preserving land.
Hieftje and plan supporters insist there would be plenty of land left to develop, but the greenbelt would protect those areas that townships deem right for open space or that have a particularly important ecological role to play, such as protecting the Huron River watershed.

John died on October 11, 1922 at age 59; Sara died fourteenth years later October 10, 1936, aged 74 and a half.
She was married in Zeeland on May 16, 1889, less than a month after her mother’s death, to John Hieftje, a grandson of one of the original settlers of the city, who is described in the marriage records as a laborer from Zeeland.
Because the records of this family are not complete, it is not clear how many children and grandchildren John and Mary Hieftje had in all, although it would be unusual if she had any more children herself, as she was 42 at the time the youngest was born in 1909.

Hieftje said it was important that representatives from Ann Arbor, Pittsfield and Scio townships came to the press conference to support the program.

Ann Arbor was founded in January 1824 by John Allen and Elisha Rumsey, both of whom were land speculators.
There are various accounts concerning the origin of the settlement's name, but one states that Allen and Rumsey decided to name it "Annarbour," for their spouses, whose names were both Ann, and for the stands of burr oak in the 640 acres (2.6 km²) of land they had purchased for $800 from the federal government.
Presidential candidate John F. Kennedy unveiled his Peace Corps proposal in 1960 at the University of Michigan, and in 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson first called for a "Great Society." The city also became a locus for left-wing activism, serving as a hub for the civil-rights movement, the anti-Vietnam War movement, and the student movement.
