Hindmarsh Island (Kumarangk in Ngarrindjeri dialect, coordinates 35°31′ S 138°52′ E) is an island in South Australia.
The area to the east of the Murray Mouth of Hindmarsh Island is the beginning of the Coorong National Park.
As of 2005 the Hindmarsh Island Marina boasts the title of the largest freshwater marina in the Southern Hemisphere.

Captain John Hindmarsh, KH, RN was the first Governor of South Australia, from 28 December 1836 to 16 July 1838.
Rear-Admiral Sir John Hindmarsh died in 1860 (1786-1860) and is buried in the grounds of St Andrews Church, Hove.
The Division of Hindmarsh federal electorate in the area near the proclamation is named after him.

John who was born in 1927 recollects his first experience with a fire near his home at Hindmarsh Valley in 1936.
John was able to use the plane not only to report the movement of fires to troops on the ground, but was also used to help with searches on land and sea.

You should contact the Lagonda Club and they can refer you to several people that have a considerable history about John Hindmarsh, much was recently revisited in 1995 for the 60th Anniversary at Le Mans.
Whilst commenting on John who lost his life in a Hawker aircraft during a test flight in 1939, little is known of his talented partner Louis Fontes, who also lost his life, possibly, in a Wellington being ferried across the UK in 1941 and thought to have crashed near Caversham.
Hindmarsh's co-driver Luis Fontes was the subject of several detailed articles I have written that were published in both Brooklands Museum's 'The Spirit' and 'Wingspan International' a couple of years ago.

In 1835 Hindmarsh was appointed Governor of South Australia and recommended Light for the position of Surveyor General, with a salary of four hundred Pounds.

Perhaps John Morphett's greatest claim to fame, however, is that he used his agents' votes to win the day for Col. Light at an acrimonious public meeting called to decide on the preferred site for the new capital, overcoming the objections of cantankerous Governor Hindmarsh.
Morphett no doubt contemplated his ongoing role in the settlement's growth as he strode the wide brick terrace added to Cummins in the 1850's, along with an elaborate porch and a spacious drawing room at the rear of the house.
Surely John and his wife Elizabeth would have been pleased with their morning room when they moved in.

Once occupied by the Wotjobaluk people, the first land grant in the area was 'Halbacutya' station, established by John Coppock in 1846.
Coppock lived at the north-eastern corner of the lake until a dispute with Robert von Stieglitz of the 'Pine Hill' run (see entry on Jeparit) forced him to move his residence to Lake Albacutya.
The source is the Wimmera River which fills Lake Hindmarsh and the water is then conveyed via Outlet Creek to Lake Albacutya.
