Home Robertson was born in Edinburgh and educated at Ampleforth College in Yorkshire and at the West of Scotland Agricultural College.
Home Robertson was the successful Labour candidate at the Berwick and East Lothian by-election in 1978, following the death of John P Mackintosh.

HOME, JOHN, an eminent dramatic poet, was born at Leith on the 22d of September, (O.S.) 1722.
He was the son of Mr Alexander Home, town-clerk of Leith, whose father was the son of Mr Home of Flass, in Berwickshire, a lineal descendant of Sir John Home of Cowdenknowes, from whom the present earl of Home is descended.
John Home, who during his whole life retained a proud recollection of his honourable ancestry, was educated, first at the grammar school of his native town, and then at the university of Edinburgh.

John Home Robertson, the head of the Holyrood Progress Group used his appearance at the inquiry to criticise Lord Fraser for adding to the delays and increasing the cost of the project.
Mr Home Robertson submitted a statement which claimed that the timing and conduct of the inquiry was having a "significant impact" on the project at this stage.
