  John B. Hood Biography
Hood graduated 44 out of 52 in the class of 1853, and was sent to an infantry post in California before his transfer to the 2nd U.S. Cavalry, which he joined in Texas.
Hood's division avoided heavy fighting at the Battle of Fredericksburg, after which his division was ordered to Suffolk, Virginia, where they collected supplies for the army and sparred with a Union force which occupied the city.
Hood was immediately taken by Preston, nicknamed "Buck", but duty called him away from her company when his division was ordered back to Northern Virginia after the Battle of Chancellorsville.

Hood was wrecked with Kearsarge 21 February 1894 on Roncador Reef off Central America in the Pacific, and was a lieutenant in Maine when she was blown up at Havana 15 February 1898.
John Hood was the only ship of the task force which participated in every sortie from reporting through the end of the war.

John Bell Hood was born on June 29, 1831, in Owingsville (Bath County), Kentucky, a son of Dr. John and Theodosia French Hood.
Hood’s reputation for being compulsive and rambunctious, as well as his reputation as a "lady’s man", seems to have evolved many years after the Civil War, and has no known verifiable or documented evidence to confirm its accuracy or authenticity.
John Bell and his siblings were left with their mother for approximately eight months each year during the middle and late 1840’s during Dr. Hood’s annual visits to Philadelphia, where he taught medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Smith Hood said, "The last forty years of the life of John Smith Hood [1861-1901] were almost wholly devoted to farming and stock raising." This supports the idea that the change from saddler to farmer was a gradual one.
