John Howard (1430–1485) was the son of Sir Robert Howard (1385-1437) and Margaret Mowbray (1391-1425), the eldest daughter of Thomas Mowbray (1356-1399) and Elizabeth FitzAlan (1366-1425).
John Howard was known as "Jack (or "Jock," hence: "Jockey") of Norfolk".
For his support of Richard III during the desposition of Edward V in 1483, he was created Duke of Norfolk, Earl Marshal of England, and Lord Admiral of all England, Ireland, and Aquitaine.

Their son John Howard, 1st duke of Norfolk (in the Howard line), received the title in 1483 when the direct Mowbray line died out.
His son, Thomas Howard, 2d duke of Norfolk, was deprived of his title and estate by Henry VII, but he regained favor and was a prominent military commander under both Henry VII and Henry VIII.
The latter was executed, but his father was restored to the title in 1553 on the accession of Mary I. His grandson, Thomas Howard, 4th duke of Norfolk, was beheaded in 1572 for conspiring on behalf of Mary Queen of Scots.

The illustrious family of Howard (q.v.), members of which have been dukes of Norfolk from 1483 to the present ~ day, with the exception of two periods during which the title was forfeited, was connected with the family of Mowbray.
Norfolk was a brutal and licentious man, but was a supporter of the Roman church, being, as he himself admits, quick against the sacramentaries.
