Topic: John II Stanley of the Isle of Man

  Stanley (Family) - LoveToKnow 1911
He bought out their rights in the Isle of Man, and, by his marriage with a sister and co-heir of the 18th earl of Oxford, acquired a claim to the great chamberlainship, which he advanced in 1626 and which was renewed by their descendants.
Although the present wealth of the Stanleys is largely derived from the great industrial development of Lancashire, they were already a power to be reckoned with in that county and in Cheshire at the time of the Wars of the Roses, and have held a leading position ever since among English nobles.
Their eldest son, Edward John Stanley, 2nd baron (1802-1869), entered the House of Commons in 1831 and became undersecretary to the home department in 1841, patronage secretary to the treasury from 1835 to 1841, paymaster-general in 1841, and under-secretary for foreign affairs from 1846 to 1852.

Between about A.D. 800 and 815 the Vikings came to Man chiefly for plunder; between about 850 and 990, when they settled in it, the island fell under the rule of the Scandinavian kings of Dublin; and between 990 and 1079, it was subject to the powerful earls of Orkney.
Early in the 13th century, when Reginald of Man did homage to King John, we hear for the first time of English intervention in the affairs of Man. But it was into the hands of Scotland that the islands were ultimately to fall.
Magnus, king of Man and the Isles, who had fought on the Norwegian side, was compelled to surrender all the islands over which he had ruled, except Man, for which he did homage.

William Stanley as Poet and Playwright: The URL of Derby
The household of Henry Stanley, the fourth Earl of Derby (William's father), was "a Court second in size and splendor only to the Queen's."[1] It supported the theatrical arts in many ways, and such luminaries as Thomas Lodge and John Donne were at various times members of the household, and so, William Stanley's intimates.
We see that both William Stanley's father and brother were involved in drama or poetry, but it is interesting to look at an even larger picture, that is, the involvement of their more-or-less feudal domain in drama.
William Stanley was born in 1560 or 1561 in either London or in Lathom House, Lancashire [6].

Isle of Man   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-31)
The Isle of Man had never surrendered its local traditions, including the regality invested in the leadership of the island, and thus the Montagues and their successors were granted the style "King of the Isles of Man".
In 1765, John Murray was successfully pressured by the government into accepting a large cash payment in return for surrenduring his title to the Crown, and transferring authority on the island to direct control by Great Britain.
Thus ended the semi-independent Kingdom of Man. Even so, the Isle of Man to this day retains considerable local autonomy, and British law enacted in London is not considered binding on the island unless the island is specifically named in the Act.
