Notes received from Don Squires on July 17, 2006: "I re-examined the Dumbarton Oaks catalog under John II and John III Ducas-Vatatzes and I now believe that this coin is a hyperpyron of John III Ducas Vatatzes minted in Magnesia circa 1232.
It appears to be a variant of what Michael Hendy, the author of Volume 4, Part 2 of the Dumbarton Oaks catalog, calls a transitional coinage between the first and second series of hyperpyra minted by John III in Magnesia.
The main difference between the two examples listed under DO 3 for John III and this coin is that the Dumbarton Oak specimens have three dots on the labarum held by the emperor on the reverse while the labarum on this coin has only two dots.
