Topic: John III Ducas Vatatzes

  John of Brienne
The legate Pelagius, however, claimed the command; and insisting on the advance from Damietta[?], in spite of the warnings of King John, he refused to accept the favourable terms of the sultan, as the king advised, until it was too late.
John was now a septuagenarian "king in exile," but he was still vigorous enough to revenge himself on Frederick, by commanding the papal troops which attacked southern Italy during the emperor's absence on the sixth crusade (1228-1229).
In 1229 John, now eighty years of age, was invited by the barons of the Latin empire of Constantinople to become emperor, on condition that Baldwin of Courtenay should marry his second daughter and succeed him.

John III Doukas Vatatzes - Phantis
John Doukas Vatatzes was probably the son of the general Basil Vatatzes by an unnamed cousin of the Emperors Isaac II Angelos and Alexios III Angelos.
John III's victory led to territorial concessions by the Latin Empire in 1225, but was followed by John's incursion into Europe, where he seized Adrianople.
John III's possession of Adrianople was terminated by Theodore Komnenos Doukas of Epirus and Thessalonica, who drove the Nicaean garrison out of Adrianople and annexed much of Thrace in 1227.

 Freeman & Sear -
John III Ducas-Vatatzes (AD 1222-54) was the second emperor of the Byzantine state in exile at Nicaea after the city of Constantinople had been captured by the Latins during the Fourth Crusade in 1204.
John sought alliances in the West that could help his position, but proceedings to resolve the schism between the churches were not enthusiastically pursued on account of the Pope's unwillingness to offend the Latin rulers of Constantinople.
Completing his reign admirably, John III is also remembered for his patronage of Greek literature and charitable and religious causes, influencing his later status as a local saint.

Notes received from Don Squires on July 17, 2006: "I re-examined the Dumbarton Oaks catalog under John II and John III Ducas-Vatatzes and I now believe that this coin is a hyperpyron of John III Ducas Vatatzes minted in Magnesia circa 1232.
It appears to be a variant of what Michael Hendy, the author of Volume 4, Part 2 of the Dumbarton Oaks catalog, calls a transitional coinage between the first and second series of hyperpyra minted by John III in Magnesia.
The main difference between the two examples listed under DO 3 for John III and this coin is that the Dumbarton Oak specimens have three dots on the labarum held by the emperor on the reverse while the labarum on this coin has only two dots.
