Topic: John Ireland (composer)

Alan Bush Music Trust - My Studies and Friendship with John Ireland
This article was written as part of a John Ireland Centenary Programme broadcast by the B.B.C. in October 1979.
John Ireland's methods of teaching composition followed those which he had himself undergone twenty years before as a student of Charles Villiers Stanford at the Royal College of Music.
In 1936, he was invited by the B.B.C. to compose a work which was to celebrate the accession to the throne of King George VI.

John Ireland (composer) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ireland was born in Bowdon, near Altrincham, Manchester, into a family of Scottish descent and some cultural distinction.
Ireland frequently visited the Channel Islands and was inspired by their landscape; he was evacuated from them just before the German invasion during World War II.
From Stanford, Ireland inherited a thorough knowledge of the music of Beethoven, Brahms and other German classics, but as a young man he was also strongly influenced by Debussy and Ravel as well as the earlier works by Stravinsky and Bartók.

 Stephen Fox Clarinets
John Ireland’s words “The clarinet is by far the finest wood instrument…” testify that - as with so many composers - the clarinet was the wind instrument which he held in the highest regard.
Ireland was riven with self-doubt and was ruthlessly critical of his own work, and it was not unusual for him to revise extensively even compositions which had already been published; works he considered irretrievably bad were simply destroyed.
Ultimately, the John Ireland Trust is the guardian of the best interests of Ireland and his memory, and their judgement as to the suitability of releasing the Trio is to be respected.

 CD Review
John Ireland (1879-1962) is one of the major English Romantic song-composers, yet compared with Quilter, Warlock, Gurney and Finzi, he is frequently neglected by both recitalists and listeners: unaccountably so, for his songs range from the light and popular to the darkly sombre and potentially cater for a wide range of tastes.
Ireland's importance as a songwriter lies not only in the quality of his individual songs, but also in his attempt to widen the scope of English song.
Ireland's setting of Huxley's early poem 'The trellis' is one of his most satisfying achievements, and John Mark Ainsley's performance captures the drowsiness of a hot summer day perfectly.

John Ireland was not a flashy, innovative composer who shocked a generation.
Instead he composed generally simple tuneful pieces that please the ear and make the heart feel lighter because of a gentle, nostalgic quality in which he can summon up the magic of a long ago Soho summer's day or the smiling face of a dear friend as in 'Merry Andrew'.
His understatement of emotion throughout is quintessetially English in mood for despite Ireland's 100% Scottish parentage he seems to me to encapsulate the mood of that splendid flower of a generation who went away to die in WWI.

 John Williams - film composer
John Williams should need little introduction since he is almost certainly the most well-known film composer, and possibly to many people the best-known composer, period.
As America's best-known composer, he as also been commissioned to compose works for some big events such as the Olympics and the unveiling of the Statue of Liberty.
One point to note that is frequently mis-quoted even in reference books, is that John Williams the composer had no involvement with the "Deer Hunter", though John Williams the guitarist played the theme tune "Cavatina" by Stanley Myers, later to have lyrics added and sung by Cleo Laine.

 John Ireland
John Ireland has a considerable reputation as a composer of chamber music, songs and piano works areas in which he was undeniably prolific but at the expense of the popularity of some marvellous orchestral works, the London Overture and the beautiful Piano Concerto: amongst works which receive so little concert exposure.
Essentially, it was in the chamber music writing that Ireland found his characteristic and indeed mature voice.
Ireland recalled that a music publisher was on his doorstep 'before breakfast' to secure publication the morning after the concert.

It (the Moeran) was written for Peers Coetmore, then the composer's fiance, later his wife and dedicatee of Moeran's absolutely superb cello concerto (her performance on an old Lyrita LP was one of the treasures of my vinyl collection).
For those reasons and because the sonatas, whilst lovely, are slightly-less-than-top drawer compared to the very best works of all three composers, I've gone for a curmudgeonly (and possibly mean) four stars rather than five for a disc of interest, distinction and reward.
Ireland was once asked if he considered himself a great composer.

I first encountered the music of John Ireland a few years ago through a CD I borrowed from a local library (it was one of the cello sonatas, I believe) and I was mesmerized by its beauty.
John Ireland once joked that his orchestral poem "Forgotten Rite" should have been called "Forgotten Quite." This disc, however, is sure to convince listeners that his music should not be forgotten.

John Ireland has had several pianistic champions, and his work was covered quite well by Lyrita in the LP days, but McCabe has the edge on previous players of this repertoire through technique, sympathy, and imagination.
The last couple of minutes rally for a more upbeat march, but the message of the final string upsurge is still “Why?” This Trio is another of the composer’s best works.
