John Jervis, 1st Earl of St Vincent (9 January, 1735-14 March, 1823) was an admiral in the British Royal Navy.
Jervis was made a Knight of the Bath after his capture of the French ship Pegase in 1782, and the following year he entered Parliament, representing Launceston (and later Yarmouth) as a Whig.
He was later created the Earl of St Vincent, and became First Lord of the Admiralty in 1801.

Yet he cannot be denied the honor of having raised the discipline of the navy to a higher level than it had reached before; he was always ready to promote good officers, and the efficiency of the squadron with which Nelson won the Battle of the Nile was largely due to him.

Sir John Jervis, 1st Earl of St. Vincent, and to use some of Forrester's fictitious characters in the framework of these stories was meant as an acknowledgement and tribute to the finely crafted novels on this author.
There are also some fine accounts on the Napoleonic Wars that I was able to access on the internet, on wikipedia and other sources, and I am very grateful to all the people who provide such wealth of historical information for free.
