History of the Johnston/Johnstone Clan - Scottish Culture
Adam Johnstone was named Laird of Johnstone near the beginning of the 15th century and took part in the Battle of Sark in 1448.
Adam's eldest son (another John) was the ancestor of the Annandale branch of the family while another son Mathew is said to have married a daughter of the Earl of Angus (chief of the Red Douglases) and his descendants formed the Westerhall branch.
In 1701, a descendant was raised to the rank of Marquess of Annandale.

The John of Johnstone above mentioned was the son of George Johnstone, the son of William of Graitney, and Baron of Newbie.
John Johnstone, the young Laird of Newbie, was Provost of Annan in 1604, and obtained its recognition as a burgh from the Convention of Royal Burghs which assembled that year at Perth, and to which he sent John Galloway (uncle to the first Lord Dunkeld), and Robert Loch, bailies of Annan, as his representatives.
The Johnstones of Wamphray died out in the male line in 1657, and their estate was ultimately bought by Dr John Rogerson, a native of the place, who at an early age went to Russia as chief physician to the Empress Catherine II., whom he attended on her deathbed.

 Johnstone of that Ilk
He may have had a son John, as Soltray charters have been claimed to prove, but there is no proven link from these two to the Johnston(e)s of Annandale, nor is there any ground on which to assume one to exist.
Sir John's successor was Adam Johnstone of that Ilk, the first known to be so designated "of that Ilk", and appears to have been probably Sir John's son.
James Johnstone of Johnstone appears first in 1504 as a surety, and thus being of age would not have been the son of the 2nd marriage, Marion Scott's first husband being alive still in June 1484.

 David Johnstone & John Hoare
The mystery of the disappearance of the tiny fifteen-foot Puffin, crewed by David Johnstone and John Hoare in their attempt to row the Atlantic, captured the world’s headlines in October 1966 and there has since been much speculation about the reasons for the tragedy.
As he poured away the years of his young manhood, Johnstone felt an increasing need to prove to himself and to the world the stuff of which he was really made, an implicit acknowledgment of the extraordinary qualities he had long sensed but had not yet translated into comprehensible or recognizable reality.
Johnstone enthused handsomely at the rough sketch which the designer there and then produced, though he thought the vessel looked a bit too comfortable, perhaps more suitable for a Mediterranean cruise.

 SIR WILLIAM JOHNSTONE PULTENEY
The Johnstones of Westerhall are probably an early offshoot of the Johnstones of Annandale in Dumfriesshire, Scotland--the main branch of the family.
The Westerhall family claims that Matthew was a son of the Chief of the Johnstones of Annandale, and that he received land called Westraw in Pettinain Parish, Lanarkshire, which the King had given to the Johnstones for service in the Battle of Arkinholm in 1455.
History records the King rewarded the Johnstones with land for their role at Arkinholm, but it has never been proven conclusively that Matthew Johnstone, founder of the Westraw (later Westerhall) branch, was a son of the Chief of the Johnstones of Annandale.

Although guitarist Davey Johnstone is best known for being a longtime member of Elton John's band, he has guested on numerous other artist's recordings over the years and is widely regarded as one of rock's most versatile players.
Johnstone and John hit it off and he was automatically welcomed into John's band full time, playing on many of his best-known hits over the years; Johnstone's playing could adapt from serene ballads ("Candle in the Wind"), to pop ("Crocodile Rock"), and even raging riff rockers ("Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting").
But despite all of his extracurricular work, Johnstone has always made working with Elton John his top priority, playing on over 20 albums with the flamboyant piano man. Johnstone has issued a lone solo album during his career, the obscure 1973 release Smiling Face.
