In the former case, they brought a woman to Christ, who had been taken in the very act of adultery, and demanded judgment against her for so flagrant a crime, when it appeared that they themselves were as guilty of a like breach of the marriagecontract.
The temple was so magnificent, says Dr. Jortin, that it was esteemed for art and beauty one of the wonders of the world; whence it was natural to expect that the Romans according to their usual custom, amidst their conquests, would endeavour to preserve it safe and entire.

 History of the College
Cranmer lost his fellowship at Jesus when he married the niece of the landlady of the nearby Dolphin tavern, due to the requirement of celibacy which was imposed on fellows of the college, but regained it when she died in childbirth a year later.
Despite this Protestant bias, the college was never a centre of Puritanism, and it took the royalist side during the Civil War, subscribing pieces of its plate for the use of Charles I, and raising a loan of £100 for the royalist cause in 1642.
He was much loved and respected in the College for his wise and calm leadership, his humour, humanity and approachability, his committed support for the academic and musical life of the College, and his astonishing courage in the face of adversity.

It is John, who states, "Salvation is from the Jews" (John 4:22) that Jesus is "the King of Israel" (John 1:49), and Old Testament thoughts and figures constantly appear in the fourth gospel.
Hence it is apparent that Irenæus must have known from Polycarp the leading facts of John's history, and especially the circumstances connected with his exile to Patmos.
They cannot be called witnesses, since the earliest of them was separated from the death of John by a period greater than that which separates us from the discovery of America by Christopher Columbus.

Charles Burney thought that it was the first of its kind to be written in English, and it is almost certainly the most serious attempt to treat the aesthetics of music systematically and philosophically in British intellectual discourse.
