Pope John Paul II appointed the diocese's auxiliary bishop Joseph Anthony Ferrario, a former Sulpcian educator and diocesan priest, as the third Bishop of Honolulu on May 13, 1982.
Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger as Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith later reversed Msgr.
The principal consecrator was William Joseph Levada, Archbishop of San Francisco and newly-appointed Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.

On September 21 of that year, Scanlan was officially ordained to the episcopacy.
On November 10, 1967, Scanlan was appointed Apostolic Administrator of Honolulu and took charge of the administration of the diocese.
On June 30, 1981, Scanlan retired but continued active ministry as Bishop Emeritus.

 Cathedral of Our Lady of Peace
A white marble altar with statues of Mary and Joseph were crafted by Italian artists and installed as a gift of the Catholics of Hawai‘i to commemorate the centennial year.
The old sanctuary was lowered to expand the worship space and create a devotional area with the statues of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, the Immaculate Heart of Mary, St. Joseph, and St. Anthony of Padua.
A Eucharistic devotional area was also created around the bronze tabernacle and a scrim was placed to separate and conceal it during celebration of the Mass and yet allow the tabernacle to be seen from the main body at other times.

After the funeral, the body of the pope was interred in the grotto of the patriarchal Vatican basilica in the same place where the body of Pope John XXIII had been buried until it was moved to the upper basilica after his beatification.

In 1890, Bishop Scanlan purchased land for the Cathedral from Sarah M. McKibben for $35,000.
The diocese’s second bishop, Joseph Sarsfield Glass (1874-1926), a man with a deep appreciation for art, was responsible for the interior decoration of the Cathedral as we see it now.
Bishop John Joseph Mitty (184-1961) was responsible for the new placement of the bishop’s coat of arms above the episcopal chair, the consecration of three marble altars in 1928, and oversaw the assembly of pews by men of the diocese.

The land where Brockton presently sits was originally deeded to Miles Standish and John Alden as well as others from these local Native Americans in 1649.
It was purchased for, "7 coats, a yard and a half in a coat, 9 hatchets, 8 hoes, 20 knives, 4 moose-skins, 10 yards and a half of cotton" all told approximately $30!!!
