One John Guest (b.1772) [2] was, according to the diaries, seventh in descent from a John Guest of the 16th century.
This John Guest was interested in coal mining and iron smelting, and in 1763 he joined Isaac Wilkinson in taking a lease from the Earl of Plymouth of property on the Taff in Glamorganshire.
On John Guest's death in 1787 his share in the furnace went to his son Z Thomas, and later to a relative, John Josiah Guest (1785-1852) [4], who however was sent as a boy to live with an uncle in Broseley and who attended Bridgnorth Grammar School.

Sir Josiah John Guest was born at Dowlais on 2nd February 1785, the son of Thomas Guest (Died 28th Feb. 1807 and buried at St. Tydfil's Church Merthyr.) and Jemima, daughter of T. Phillips of Shifnal, Shropshire.
Josiah John Guest first married on 11th March 1817 an Irish Lady, Miss Maria Elizabeth Ranken 3rd daughter of William Ranken, but she and her baby died in childbirth the following January and was buried at Llandaff.
Josiah John Guest first became involved in Freemasonry on 1st March 1810, when he was proposed as a candidate for initiation in Glamorgan Lodge.

JOHN F. JENNISON, was born at Walpole [NH] in August 1813, was educated in the public schools and at Cavendish academy, and studied medicine with Dr. Davis in Norwich Vt. He graduated at Norwich academy in 1838, and from Dartmouth college in 1842.

John Guest was an Englishman from Broseley, Staffordshire, and arrived in Merthyr Tydfil in 1759 to act as manager of the "Myrthy Furnace." So efficient was he that he was soon given sole charge of the furnace, while Thomas Lewis saw to the transport of the iron to Cardiff.
As the business grew rapidly, the Dowlais Iron Company was formed in 1759.By the time of Guest's death in 1785, the production of iron had trebled from the 500 tons a year in 1759.Thomas Guest succeeded his father as manager, and held the position until his death in 1807.
As a lay preacher he often officiated at the chapels in the neighbourhood.John Josiah Guest was the next manager and he, too, put all his energy into the work.

Somewhere I cannot recall, I saw Guest's translation compared with Edward William Lane contemporaneous (1838-1840) translation of the 1001 Nights, both were bowdlerized, but both fully captured the mood or aura of the original.
