Obituary: John Junkin | Obituaries | Guardian Unlimited
John Junkin, who has died from lung cancer aged 76, was a gifted scriptwriter who made an important contribution to British comedy from the immediate postwar years to the early 1990s.
There was something of Junkin's own background in the parts he played in films and on television, and in his humour as a scriptwriter.
Throughout his most active period, when Junkin's way with a show was to work on it throughout the night if necessary, he was regarded as a hardened bachelor, having brief relationships with many women.

John Francis Junkin (January 29, 1930, Ealing, London - March 7, 2006, Aylesbury) was an English radio, television and film performer and scriptwriter.
In comedy roles, Junkin was rarely short of work for his outstanding ability to play the stoney-faced symbol of low level, petty-minded and unquestioning authority, whether the army sergeant, police constable or site foreman, the sort of person that actually can make all of our lives a misery.

Junkin, by then living in near poverty in rented accommodation in Buckinghamshire, had good reason to feel perplexed by the new direction of television entertainment, an industry which for three decades could hardly do without him.

Junkin’s main contribution to entertainment, however, was his innumerable and consistent contributions, through writing and acting, to the success of others.

The glum-looking John Junkin was a familiar face in television comedy for more than 30 years, during which his hair-line receded beyond sight, but he was also one of a band of writers who contributed to the revolution that brought anarchic humour to the small screen.
Also appearing in the series, Junkin was on the receiving end when Feldman and Brooke-Taylor, dressed up as an old couple, reduced him to a quivering wreck in the roles of travel agent, marriage counsellor and Post Office counter clerk.
With Barry Cryer and others, Junkin contributed to The Morecambe and Wise Show during the duo's heyday at the BBC, and he and Cryer were principal writers for the first two programmes when they switched to ITV in 1978.

Adapted from John King's novel, The Football Factory is an entertaining blend of Snatch, Trainspotting and the episode of Grange Hill where the boys organise a fight with another school.
The story concentrates on three members of the infamous Chelsea Headhunter's 'firm', who use their team's matches as an excuse to brawl with rival pseudo-supporters; narrator and stereotypical twenty-something lad Tommy, mockney hardman Billy and repugnant rat-boy Zebedee (so-called because he likes 'white powder').
It is a deft, if loose, adaptation of John King's blistering debut novel, with characters amalgamated and - in some cases - invented for the purposes of the story which Love has pulled away from King's episodic, elliptical inner-narrative and grounded with a tight time-frame and tit-for-tat war between Chelsea and Millwall thugs.
