  John K. Richards - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John K. Richards (March 15, 1856 - March 1, 1909), jurist, son of Samuel and Sarah (Kelvey) Richards, was born in Ironton, Lawrence County, Ohio.
Having received his early education in the schools of his native town, John Richards graduated from Swarthmore College with the degree of A.B. in 1875, and two years later received the same degree from Harvard University.
Richards remained a member of the circuit court until his death.

Richard's drawings were more or less harsh and lacking in detail, especially where he attempted to introduce figures or animals often somewhat out of perspective.
"John Richards, after his discharge from the army, remained in Germantown, and was given the position of sexton of Calvary P.E. Church on Manheim Street; and during his spare time made many of the sketches aforesaid.
Thirty-three of these views are printed from the identical zinc plates made by John Richards; eight are reproductions of original sketches now first published; while the remainder are from transfers made of prints from the original plates.

From 1759 Richards was a very successful painter at Covent Garden, London, where he collaborated with Nicholas Thomas Dall (fl 1760–71; d 1777) and Giovanni Battista Cipriani, and from 1777 to 1803 he was the theatre’s Principal Painter.
Richards exhibited at the Free Society of Artists from 1769 to 1783, and was a founder-member of the Royal Academy, where from 1769 to 1809 he exhibited capriccios and landscapes, and occasionally, early intimations of the picturesque, such as a Cascade at Hestercombe (signed and dated 1770; Stourhead, Wilts, NT).
In 1786 Richards was elected Secretary of the Royal Academy.

Also the lynching party in the Court House yard when a man was hanged following the murder of Chemist Beggs; the Gates murder trial(reported verbatim for the Register by the late John K. Richards), and the burning of the old Court House--all occasions of great excitement--remain vividly in mind.
Besides his service on the Gates case he was forced to be a witness of the lynching as he chanced to be passing the Court House, and gave us a wonderful account of that.
John Campbell, the founder of Ironton, was a figure whom none who knew him will ever forget.
