Keith R. Ihlanfeldt and David L. Sjoquist review the spatial mismatch literature that has appeared in the wake of John Kain's comprehensive assessment of his spatial mismatch hypothesis that was published in a 1992 issue of Housing Policy Debate.
They find that much of the research supports Kain's original hypothesis: that low-income minorities who are concentrated in inner-city settings have limited access to the suburban job market.
However, Ihlanfeldt and Sjoquist note that much of the recent spatial mismatch literature emphasizes only the difficulty that inner-city minorities face in commuting to suburbia.
