"John Wilkes Booth interested himself in his behalf; obtained from the Confederate government at Richmond, Va., the evidence that he was a commissioned officer of the Confederate Navy; he obtained, also, evidence that his acts were only those of legitimate warfare, and that he was acting under instructions from the Confederate government.

John Holt died in 1865, and was one of the three thousand or more officers who looked for liberty through one of the most stupendous plots of the war of the rebellion--an uprising in the North.

One was Thomas Kean of Charleston, and the other was John Kean of St. Helena's Parish, as that part of Beaufort County was then known.
On Dec. 31, 1781, John Kean was exiled from South Carolina by the British for rebel activities.
Released in 1782, John Kean was later one of the six representatives from St. Helena's Parish in the 1785-86 General Assembly.

Fn.1 Kean also represented himself and his company to be agents of Investment Management and Research, Inc. ("IM&R") and Raymond James & Associates, Inc. ("James & Assocs."), two Florida corporations registered in South Carolina as securities brokers.
While this could not be used as evidence of contacts with South Carolina so as to confer specific jurisdiction, it is relevant regarding the credibility of Respondent Summit's affidavit stating they did not know Kean until he approached them on Appellants' behalf in 1991.
In finding Kean was not acting as Respondents' agent, the trial judge stated that the party asserting agency must prove the existence of the agency, which must be clearly established by the facts.

During this century, Hamilton F. Kean served in the United States Senate from 1929 to 1937, and his son, Robert W. Kean, served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1939 to 1959 and nearly won election to the United States Senate in 1958.
Thomas H. Kean, a son of Robert Kean, was elected to the New Jersey State Assembly at a young age and went on to become Speaker.
JOHN LYNCH represented Middlesex County in the Senate from 1956 to 1978, and his son, JOHN LYNCH, has held the seat since 1982.

 SC 5th Cavalry Regiment
The SC 5th Cavalry Regiment was organized in January, 1863, by consolidating the 14th and 17th Battalions South Carolina Cavalry.
For a time it served in the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, then in March, 1864, moved to Virginia with 1,200 effectives.
Later it was active in the campaign of the Carolinas and attached to Logan's Brigade.

Looking for any information regarding the background of John Kean of South Carolina, (b Charleston, 1756, died New Jersey, 1795, delegate from South Carolina to Continental Congress, 1785).
I believe his father's name was James, but have no idea regarding his mother's family, whether he had any siblings, whether the family came from Scotland or Ireland (or both), etc. Any information would be much appreciated.
