John Keane (hurler) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although John Keane was not a member of the young team commemorated in the song, he was waiting in the wings, as it were, and very shortly afterwards he burst on the scene as one of the stars of the Waterford Minor hurling team – he was still only fifteen.
John always played the ball and what a joy it was to see him jump into the air and bring the ball down to his hand.
John's name became a household word throughout the nation when, in 1937, against the mighty Limerick team that beat Waterford in the Munster championship by two points, 3-4 to 3-2, he gave an outstanding individual performance in holding scoreless the great Mick Mackey.

Central Europe Review - Book Review: John Keane's Biography of Vaclav Havel
Keane is not to be faulted for having been given almost no access to Havel himself; he is to be criticised, however, for not making better use of the next best thing, the extensive transcripts that capture Havel at work in critical moments.
Keane's neglect of the Hradecek meeting is typical of his slipshod treatment of Havel's role in the failure of the federation.
Keane's claim that Havel did not strive 'to cultivate the institutions of republican democracy, like parliament and a judiciary that upheld the rule of law' is plausible only if we completely ignore Havel's homily on the Rechtsstaat in one of his very first presidential addresses, to the federal assembly on 23 January 1990.

John Keane - Cambridge University Press
In this provocative book, John Keane calls for a fresh understanding of the vexed relationship between democracy and violence.
He probes the disputed meanings of the term violence, and asks why violence is the greatest enemy of democracy, and why today’s global ‘triangle of violence’ is tempting politicians to invoke undemocratic emergency powers.
Throughout, Keane gives prominence to ethical questions, such as the circumstances in which violence can be justified, and argues that violent behaviour and means of violence can and should be ‘democratised’ - made publicly accountable to others, so encouraging efforts to erase surplus violence from the world.
