Topic: John Kelly (politician)

Kelly, John. The Columbia Encyclopedia, Sixth Edition. 2001-05
After the exposure of William M. Tweed, Kelly, by then popularly known as “Honest John,” reorganized the Tammany machine.
Kelly’s refusal to back Tilden’s candidate for governor, Lucius Robinson, and his decision to run for governor himself as an independent helped bring about the election (1879) of Alonzo Cornell.
While he was head of Tammany, Kelly was able to determine the course of New York City elections, and he himself was city comptroller from 1876 to 1880.

 Avocation, in vocational psychology dictionary
Traditionally, an avocation has been described as a secondary occupation that an individual might pursue outside of the hours of his or her primary one.
Thus, a politician might paint as an avocation (this was the case with Winston Churchill, for example); thus, avocation was a form of leisure activity.
In a related vein, avocation has been used to refer to unpaid work pursued for love of the activity; for example, the National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) has referred to the athletic avocations of its amateur athletes.

Reason magazine -- February 2001, Bill Clinton’s Exit Interviews by Nick Gillespie
These are, to put it mildly, curious claims for perhaps the most divisive politician in recent decades, one whose basic response to any and all perceived adversaries was to attack their moral standing and integrity (just ask Billy Dale, the slandered former head of the White House Travel Office).
More disturbing still: Three weeks after the president made his comments, he headlined a fundraiser in New Mexico for congressional hopeful John Kelly, the lead prosecutor in the Lee case.
This willingness to separate himself from his own administration may in the end be Clinton’s truly novel contribution to presidential politics; if this gesture does not exactly originate with Clinton, he is surely its master practitioner.
