 Literary Encyclopedia: Gauden, John
The clinching evidence for Gauden's authorship of “the king's book” – the reverentially familiar name for Eikon Basilike is revealing – lies in his correspondence with Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon in 1661.
Nonetheless, visits to the imprisoned King Charles I swayed his conscience, and it now seems very likely that he was the author of Eikon Basilike (1649), a narrative of the king's life and sufferings written in the king's voice.
John Gauden was born in Mayland in Essex in 1605, educated at Bury St Edmunds School and then at St John's College, Cambridge.

The Film Tribune - Robin and Marian (1976)
Cons: Nicol Williamson as Little John; screenplay by the author of "The Lion in Winter", written in the same manner; the fact that Richard Lester, a talented director of comedies, was hired to direct what is essentially a poignant tragedy.
While foiling Prince John's wicked plots, Robin falls in love with the lovely Maid Marian, and when King Richard returns, everything in dear old England is as merry as if right out of a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta.
Only John maintains some similarity in the two screenplays, but because such a link between the two works was never intended, this reviewer is ready to overlook this argument about inconsistency.
