John Henry Kirby, founder of a firm that eventually operated sawmills in the heart of the pineywoods and controlled 300,000 acres of timberland, was a native of Tyler County.
A patron, Samuel Bronson Cooper, an attorney and state senator, arranged Kirby’s appointment as calendar clerk of the Texas senate in 1882.
Kirby was born in 1860 and educated in local schools.

Former assistant U.S. attorney John Kirby said prosecutors have “the right to fish” as long as their focus is on suspected criminal activity.
Jeremy Warren, attorney for Agranoff, said he believes Coronado’s indictment is imminent but worries that the grand jury investigation won’t end there.
Coronado spent nearly four years in federal prison for his role in a 1992 fire at a Michigan State University lab that he said was conducting research to aid mink farmers.
