Drama   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
John is a case study in psychosexual pathology, one of the most truly frightening characterizations in the Canadian theatre.
Krizanc is one of the few Canadian playwrights at home in the realm of international politics.
Krizanc triumphs in sustaining a constant organic relationship between the high seriousness of the issues and the highly theatrical environment in which they are debated.

Playback - Articles - For Krizanc, the
John Krizanc always dreamed of being a writer, but only recently did he begin to think he could make a career of it.
Krizanc, who is up for a Gemini for Best Writing in a Dramatic Program or Mini-Series, ran The Book Cellar on trendy Yorkville Avenue in Toronto for 15 years before venturing into writing full time in 1988.
Krizanc found writing for film a dramatic departure from writing plays: the pace is very different, he says, and film obviously doesn't depend so much on sequence.

 Ellen Dubin stars in Tamara
John Krizanc's play is a melodramatic concoction set in the Italy of 1927 when Mussolini's fascists were solidifying their hold on the country.
It's impossible, too, not to be tantalized by the thought of what you might be missing (not to mention the screams, gunshots and door-slams that always seem to be going on somewhere else, and the vintage Rolls in waiting at the front door) and to at least consider coming again and making other choices.
Krizanc, since writing Tamara, has not had a very obtrusive theatrical career, but he has written for film and television, in both of which, of course, the choosing is done by the camera.

Tamara launched the reputations of playwright John Krizanc and director and co-conceiver Rose, whose Necessary Angel theatre company is mounting this anniversary production as part of the World Stage festival (see sidebar).
The villa is occupied by Gabriele d'Annunzio (John Gilbert), an Italian poet and former revolutionary hero who is now a puppet of the state, his silence bought with luxury and cocaine.
But it seems there will always be tales of audience members so wrapped up in the nearness of the drama that they barely suppress quiet entreaties, or offer to carry luggage for a lame servant (actually an actor with an injured foot).

But it's true in a literal sense for Tamara, John Krizanc's high-concept 1981 political thriller in which the audience chases upstairs and downstairs after 10 mysterious characters and hundreds of plot points.
Krizanc's script, from what I saw and heard, can be coarse, but it can also be eerily poetic.
