John La Montaine was born March 17, 1920 in Oak Park, Illinois, and studied theory with Stella Roberts at the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago.
La Montaine feels that all of his works, however diverse, are related one to another, and there are frequent references to material that appears elsewhere in his compositions.
La Montaine's fourth Piano Concerto is that rarity in this century (or any other, for that matter): a listener-friendly work that immediately appeals with memorable tunes and catchy rhythms, yet grows increasingly impressive with each rehearing, revealing skillful workmanship and a deep-seated musical logic.

In 1958, the Ford Foundation commissioned “Concerto For Piano and Orchestra, Opus 9,” for which he was awarded the Pulitzer Prize.
Among other operas, he was commissioned by Penn State University to write an opera based on the American Revolution for the Bicentennial Celebration of 1976.
John La Montaine now lives and works in Hollywood, CA.

John La Montaine began his musical career as a celestist and pianist with the NBC symphony under Toscanini.
In 1958, the Ford Foundation commissioned La Montaine to compose a work for the National Symphony Orchestra, and the resulting Concerto for Piano and Orchestra was awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 1959.
"La Femme a Barbe" is the fourth movement of a set of pieces for different solo instruments with chamber orchestra, "Scenes from a Traveling Circus".

Born in 1947 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, La Barbara is an experimentalist using the human voice, instruments, and interactive technology both as a composer and a performer.
French composer Jean-Benjamin de La Borde (1734-1794) was also a violinist and a student of older music.
He was a close friend of composer Jan Ladislav Dussek, who wrote Elegie harmonique sur la mort de Prince Louis Ferdinand de Prusse upon the Prince's death, as well as of Louis Spohr and Johann.
