John O. Laidley served as prosecuting attorney for Cabell County, and attended the Virginia Convention of 1829-30.
His brother, W. Sydney Laidley, was a West Virginia attorney and historian and a law partner of his brother-in-law, George W. Summers.
Elected to the U.S. Congress in 1841, Summers later became a circuit court judge and a member of the Peace Congress in 1861.

The graves for John and Lucinda are between that tree and the monuments.
Wife of John, Sr, at least according to the person who documented this graveyard in the 1960s, where the notes just put Lucy's grave next to John's and say "wife Lucy".
While I suspect John's mother was a Catherine, the dates given on the published list for this stone say that this one died in "1856 age 37" which has her born in 1819.

I have one cousin, Dr. Edmund W. Laidley, who is still living at the age of ninety.
If your father was the James Laidley who lived near Summerfield Mo, you would be a first cousin of mine.

In was a log house built on a high point of land about two miles below the mouth of the Guyandotte River and about two blocks south of the Ohio River sometime in the 1830's.
During the Civil War Laidley's niece, Salina C. Mason, purchased the school in 1863 for $1,500.
It was named in honor of General John Hunt Oley, who was in charge of the city's schools, General Oley died that year.

There are two mineral springs in this county of some celebrity, the Blue Sulphur on Mud River 3 miles east of Barboursville, and a sulphur spring on the Guyandotte about 18 miles south-west of Barboursville, both of which have recently been much resorted to on account of the efficacy of their waters.
This is one of the old shires established in 1634, situated on the north side of James River, with James City on the east, New Kent on the north, and Henrico on the west.
There are also some primary schools; and the hills in the vicinity of th eplace abound in rich bituminious coal which blazes readily without the use of a blowers.

It was called Mt. Hebron, and early records suggest the structure may have been used for church services as well as for a school.
In 1838 John Laidley, longtime Cabell County prosecutor, established a new school at Mt. Hebron, naming it for his friend and mentor, Supreme Court Justice John Marshall.
