Lamb, appointed Collector of Customs for the Port of New York by President Washington, held the post until his death in 1800.
An active participant in New York resistance to the British, he had been a soldier in Richard Montgomery's December 1775 expedition to Quebec, where he was wounded and taken prisoner.
Lamb returned to New York in the summer of 1776 and was promoted to Major and Colonel of Artillery under General Henry Knox.

Survivors include his wife, Mable Lee Lamb; four daughters, Karen Smith of Virginia Beach, Sharon McBride of Newport News, Diana Ferebee and Mary Thomas, both of Virginia Beach; a son, John Walter Lamb Jr.
