The son of a solicitor, Le Mesurier was educated at Sherborne School, and began to study acting at the age of 20, using his mother's maiden name (common in the Channel Islands) Le Mesurier (pronounced 'Le Measurer') as his stage name.
Le Mesurier's most popular TV (and radio) role was as the upper-class Sergeant Arthur Wilson in Dad's Army from 1968 to 1977.
In 1975 Le Mesurier narrated Bod, an animated children's programme from the BBC about a boy named Bod, his aunt Flo and their friends and their rather strange adventures (like falling into a manhole and finding a giant strawberry).

John served in the Home Guard during the Second World War, by which time he'd become leading man at Stratford, playing the likes of Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello and Richard III.
Although the financial rewards were greater than those he could possibly earn on the stage, he wasn't impressed with many of the pictures he appeared in.

John was to appear in a number of the "Hancock's Half Hour" TV shows: "The Lawyer: The Crown V James", "The New Nose", "The Horror Serial", "The Servants", "Lord Byron Lived Here", "The Cruise" and "The Cold".
John was also considered for the part of Eric Sykes and Hattie's next door neighbour in the BBC-TV "Sykes" programmes but John declined the part and it was given to Richard Wattis.
In 1984, John's autobiography, "A Jobbing Actor", was published posthumously and in 1994, the Dead Comics Society erected a plaque to his memory at his former flat in Baron's Court with various surviving members of the "Dad's Army" cast in attendance.

McClure, Sir Robert John Le Mesurier, explorer, adventurer (b at Wexford, Ire 28 Jan 1807; d at London, Eng 17 Oct 1873).
From August to October 1850 he coasted east hundreds of kilometres to Cape Parry, wheeled north to Banks Island and reached and wintered in Prince of Wales Strait, the last link in the fabled NORTHWEST PASSAGE, which he undoubtedly discovered.
Sir John FRANKLIN's earlier claim, for which all witnesses were dead, was only discovered by Sir Francis MCCLINTOCK in 1859.
