But an even bigger factor was the changes that had occurred for Colvin and Leventhal in their lives.
Leventhal, who had dated Colvin at the time of Steady On and following their breakup didn't renew his songwriting/production partnership with her until A Few Small Repairs, had also become a first-time father.

Michelle Branch: Hotel Paper - PopMatters Music Review
It's like Branch is suffering from highway hypnosis; she seems to have been made sleepy by staring at the white lines on the highways, and most of the songs just lumber along at the same plodding, deliberate pace, boasting very few of the fun hooks that made her previous album so annoyingly likeable.
John Shanks is back at the helm, producing eight of Hotel Paper's 13 tracks, with three other producers (Greg Wells, Josh Abraham, and John Leventhal) handling the other five.
Shanks's country-ish production on "Love Me Like That" rings hollow, especially when compared to Leventhal's fine work, and Sheryl Crow, who always seems desperate to hang around people half her age, contributes some very unspectacular vocals to the track.

Her final two albums for Columbia, Interiors (1990) and The Wheel (1993), often called "chick records" by those who lack the sense or the ears to know better, were the yin and the yang of that severe breakup.
Despite a long and distinguished career that's produced a handful of signature tunes and records, Cash has created an exquisitely somber and reflective album, perhaps his last, that is a stone masterpiece of American music.
Part of the credit for Rules of Travel has to go to John Leventhal, whose previous production credits include work with Kelly Willis, Jim Lauderdale, and, most famously, Shawn Colvin, with whom he had a personal relationship and won several Grammy Awards.
