Lill studied at the Royal College of Music and under Wilhelm Kempff.
Lill has made a number of recordings, including the complete piano concertos of Beethoven, Brahms and Rachmaninoff and the complete piano sonatas of Beethoven and Prokofiev.

John didn’t seem to understand why I wanted to study with him after having studied with Lill for two years, and neither could many others at the college whose tongues wagged about it.
Lill wasn’t technical with me, it was always a matter of demonstration and style, and in that respect he had a lot of influence on me. The trouble with pianists was that so few of them appreciated or even knew of much English music.

Lill has a nice tone and his virtuosity cannot be doubted, though there is a part in the "Emperor" which I though could have warranted a retake -- Lill's playing sounds a little clumsy.
The piano that John Lill uses doesn't have the most pleasant quality available -- in fact I find it rather lacking in colour and it has a rather harsh tone.
John Lill doesn't lack experience in these works, on the contrary this is probably the third time he's recording these.

Buying any boxed set of a composer's works is always a risky decision; rarely does the set come together as a coherent whole, for there are invariably strong performances and weaker ones.
It must be said however that this John Lill set is a fine one and if here and there the performances are not always of the very highest order, the misgivings are so small as to be negligible.
