John Linnell is one-half of They Might Be Giants, the quirky Brooklyn duo who have spread their offbeat pop mastery over almost two decades and grown up from nerd-rock outsiders to Grammy-winning nerd-rock insiders.
Linnell and his partner-in-crime John Flansburgh each have indulged in side projects in the later years of the group's existence, and the former's primary outlet is his State Songs project, in which he attempts to record a song for each of the 50 United States of America.
John Linnell of They Might Be Giants, ever the explorer of fresh musical paths, has embarked on an ambitious, somewhat silly, but undeniably catchy project: to record songs representing each of the 50 United States of America.

 Ink 19 :: John Linnell
To the untrained eye, this is going to seem like a waste of time, since I'm about to worship at a Giant's feet once again, but trust me, I've been listening to this record pretty closely for a while, and the praise I'm about to heap on it is well-earned.
Of the 16 songs on John Linnell's long-awaited solo debut, 15 are named for 15 states of the union, while the 16th, "The Songs of the 50 States," serves as a kind of theme song for the project.
That's not to say that the lyrics aren't relevant, either, though, as Linnell makes such observations as "Iowa is a witch," "Oregon is bad," and most interestingly, "Arkansas," about a ship the exact size and shape of Bill Clinton's home state.

Linnell and Flansburgh went their separate ways after graduating high school, with the former joining the little-known Rhode Island new wave band the Mundanes; however, in 1981 both relocated to Brooklyn, NY, where they began writing and recording as They Might Be Giants.
Both also pursued solo projects, with Linnell releasing a pair of solo EPs, State Songs and Hall of Mayors, on TMBG's Hello Recording Club label; an expanded version of State Songs followed on the Zoë imprint in 1999, one year after he was named alongside l...

The prolific and quirky John Linnell of They Might Be Giants has come up with 16 pop songs-one each for 16 different states of the U.S., but not literally, of course.
John Linnell's brilliance as a songwriter shines through the record, and his rhythms, arrangements and melodies throughout the album are consistently amazing: Even with the carousel album merrily chugging along in the background, the songs have the mix of sweetness and melancholy you expect from TMBG, all set to a great beat.
Occasionally you wish Linnell could write a straight album of songs, with conventional lyrics and feelings: His cover of "Darlin' Allison" on Gordon Gano's solo CD was a heartfelt, wistful ode to a lost love.

Whether the cultural meccas of New York and California receive a little chin music from Linnell in the future remains to be seen.
For now, playful pokes at President Clinton's boyhood home of Arkansas -- the song refers to the less-than-watertight Battleship Arkansas, one designed in the very shape of the state that bears her name -- come complete with faux pomp and circumstance and work brilliantly.
As educational as it is ridiculous (Idaho's "vast hydroelectric dams produce enough power to deep-fry each of her potatoes millions of times over"), State Songs is an unbeatable joyride for weary travelers, plus a fun, G-rated audio compendium to any American road atlas.

Musically, the duo of John Flansburgh and John Linnell borrowed from everywhere, but their freewheeling eclecticism was enhanced by their arcane, geeky sense of humor.
Both Johns went to college after high school, with Linnell playing in the Mundanes, a new wave group from Rhode Island.
Although Flansburgh and Linnell were building a cult following, they had a hard time getting a record deal, so they set up Dial-A-Song -- a phone line that played songs on an answering machine -- as a way to get their songs heard.

This decoration perhaps also reveals the influence of the Paris-trained Swedish cabinet-makers, Georg Haupt and Christopher Fuhrlohg, who were briefly employed in Linnell’s workshop about this time.
