Lodge had already co-written songs with Justin Hayward for several years, and their styles--Hayward's mystical romantic songs and Lodge's hook-laden hard rock songs--as well as their voices complimented each other well.

Jon Lodge's work in visual media, which dates as his primary artistic focus to about 1994, is the outgrowth of many years of cultivation and creative activity.
The appreciation of chance effects, experimentation with unconventional materials and processes, and the cultivation of unpremeditated gesture and personalized "handwriting" are among the elements of Jon's work that correlate the worlds of experimental visual art with the musical avant garde.
The lines of a saxophone solo by John Coltrane, which in Jon's words, "comes in and out and fractures the melody," and of Chet Baker's trumpet, a "broken-up, wobbling line full of air," are transcribed in his drawings.

Next, Lodge's bass-driven Tortoise and the Hare (guess what it's about) has a wonderful groove to it, and although Lodge's singing leaves something to be desired, it's catchy, and could've been a hit single for them had they chosen to release it.
Lodge's Steppin' in a Slide Zone doesn't sound too much like anything the band had ever done before, but it's a really catchy pop-rocker, and the harmonies are quite reminiscient of I'm Just a Singer (not to mention that the song works PERFECTLY live with an orchestra).
Lodge's seven minute Talking Out of Turn is even better, with effective bits of orchestration, sad yet optimistic lyrics about losing a loved one due to not being able to shut up, and guitar parts that help to hammer it all home.
