	John Loewen - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		John Loewen (pronounced Lay-ven) (born December 21, 1949) is a businessman and politician in Manitoba, Canada.
		Loewen was born in Elkhorn, Manitoba, and raised in Winnipeg.
		Loewen was considered a rising star in his party, and there was some speculation that he would run to succeed Gary Filmon as party leader in 2000.

		John Loewen, the Conservative MLA whose warnings about the Crocus Investment Fund proved to be accurate, made a surprise announcement yesterday that he is quitting provincial politics to run federally for the Liberal Party.
		Loewen’s announcement, made with Treasury Board President Reg Alcock at his side, is seen as a coup for the federal Liberals and a blow to the provincial Conservatives and Opposition Leader Stuart Murray.
		Loewen “made the statement the Conservative party in Canada is not a moderate, centrist party and we think that is quite true with the provincial Tories and the federal Tories,” Doer said.

		While many people inside and outside the party lament John Loewen's decision to leave to run for the federal Liberals, I have to tell you that personally I feel that this is a major step up for the provincial party.
		John Loewen had some name recognition and was a strong performer in the house, but my feeling sometimes was that he wasn't too engaged into the growth of the party, either within his riding or as a whole.
		Some will suggest that this is sour grapes on behalf of a Tory upset with Loewen's decision to run as a federal Liberal, and it's fair to say that I certainly wouldn't be open with my criticism of how I saw his performance had he remained a provincial Tory.
