John Lubbock, 1st Baron Avebury, (April 30, 1834–May 28, 1913), English banker, politician, naturalist and archaeologist was born the son of Sir John William Lubbock, Bart.
Lubbock was educated at Eton College from 1845 and afterwards was taken into his father's bank, where he became a partner at the age of twenty-two.
Lubbock was elected the first president of the Institute of Bankers in 1879; in 1881 he was president of the British Association, and from 1881 to 1886 president of the Linnean Society of London.

John studied conducting under the great Romanian, Sergiu Celebidache, and has appeared as guest conductor with many leading UK orchestras including the City of Birmingham Symphony, the London Philharmonic, BBC Scottish Symphony, Hallé, London Mozart Players, Manchester Camerata and Northern Sinfonia.
John founded OSJ in 1967, whilst still a student at the Royal Academy of Music in London, with the aim of building an orchestra that would serve the community, not just add to the ‘music scene’.
John works with youth orchestras at the Royal Academy of Music, Oxford University and the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and went on a highly acclaimed tour of Argentina with the London Schools Symphony Orchestra in 1999.

Survivors include two sons, Dean and Gene, both of Lubbock; a daughter, Anneta Chapman of Arlington; three brothers, Earl Lewis and Bill Lewis, both of Sweetwater and J.H. Lewis of Huntsville; three sisters, Fannie Ventle of Lubbock, Della Rice of Weatherford and Martha Burleson of California; and six grandchildren.
Survivors include three sons, Jerry of El Paso, Bobby of Houston and Don of San Angelo; two daughters, Jo Ann Ray of Lubbock and Linda Heimel of Jasper, Ark.; a brother, Lesley New of Hico; a sister, Minnie McKenzie of Hico; 17 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
