Lyall was a useful defender for West Ham Utd.
John Lyall was sacked in June 1989 after West Ham United were again relegated to the Second Division, but he made his return to football management the following summer with Ipswich Town.
John Lyall lost the job as Ipswich Town manager in December 1994, with the club bottom of the Premiership, and never returned to football management.

John Lyall (1752-1805) was born in Scotland and had a good education but little else when he departed from his father's farm in Ayton, Berwickshire and ventured south to start a business in London.
John Lyall was a gentleman of some means and an energetic one at that.
At some point, the Lyall family donated the glass for the east window in the chancel of St. John the Baptist Church in Findon and my guess is that it was during John's lifetime.

John Lyall guided Ipswich to a mid table finish in the 1990-1991 Second Division campaign but the following season saw them crowned champions of the Second Division and gain promotion to the new FA Premier League, ready for the 1992-1993 season.
Lyall was sacked as Ipswich manager in December 1994 with the club rooted to the bottom of the Premiership.
