Berrien County is a county located in the extreme southwest of the state of Michigan.
Berrien county's boundaries were set off by an act of the legislature of the Michigan Territory on October 29, 1829 with its present limits, but it was initially attached as Niles Township to Cass County for administrative purposes.
In 1831 Berrien County was detached from Cass County.

Born at Rocky Hill, near Princeton, New Jersey, he moved with his parents to Savannah, Georgia, in 1782; was graduated from Princeton College in 1796; studied law in Savannah; was admitted to the bar and began practice in Louisville, Georgia in 1799.
Berrien County, Georgia and Berrien County, Michigan (settled when he was attorney general), are named in his honor.

Berrien began his law practice in 1799, at the age of 18, and worked as a private attorney until 1810 when he assumed the judgeship of the Eastern District of Georgia.
Berrien then returned to private practice but headed back to Washington, D.C., in 1841 as a Whig in the United States Senate, and he stayed in that post until 1852.

Berrien received his commission as commander, 13 March 1856, and during 1858-'9 was attached to the navy yard at Portsmouth, N. It.
In February 1860, he was ordered to Hong-Kong, China, where he took command of the sloop of war "John Adams," was commissioned captain in 1862, and sent to Pittsburghh, Pennsylvania, as assistant inspector of ordnance at the Fort Pitt Works.

I have retired to Savannah GA and have learned a great deal of information about John and John McPherson Berrien; John McPherson Berrien was one of 4 founders of the Ga Historical Society and it is full of info on him and Major John.
Incidently, the John Berrien House is still standing, is currently a derelict, and is about to be fully renovated.

My Great, Great Grandfather Simeon Brant II was also a veteran of the war of 1812 & fought with the regular Army in the Battle of Black Rock on the Canadian frontier.
He's burried in the Brant cemetary on Park Rd. in Berrien County, Mich. I was raised there on my Grandpa Orval L. Brant's farm about 1/2 mile from cemetary.
