The Degas Dancer, kindly loaned by Mr Madejski, is a pretty enough work but completely out of place amid a bunch of 20th century British paintings and completely out of sympathy with the room in which it is being shown.
In the meantime, we should all be grateful to the RA’s present-day benefactors for braving a punitive tax regime and a culture more keen on asserting ‘rights’ than soliciting patronage in order to restore these handsome rooms to public view.

Mr Madejski made a donation of £3 million to the Royal Academy to help pay for work to go ahead on the renovation of the suite of five rooms, which have been hidden behind closed doors for more than two centuries.

One of Britain's wealthiest businessmen was yesterday revealed as the buyer of a £5 million Edgar Degas sculpture when he announced that he would lend it to the Royal Academy for two years.
John Madejski bought Degas's bronze figure of a young ballet dancer at Sotheby's in London three weeks ago but his identity remained a closely guarded secret until the deal with the academy was made public.
The 3ft high sculpture will be displayed in the first exhibition in the John Madejski Fine Rooms, which have been restored with the help of a £3 million donation from the businessman, who owns Reading Football Club.

Burghfield FC, who helped champion for funds  played some demonstration matches in front of John Madejski, the Reading FC chairman and the VIPs from the FA, the Football Foundation and the local parish council.
Mr Madejski inspected the newly constructed pavilion, now named the Burghfield Millenium Pavilion, and then spent time watching the "future Reading stars" (his words) as the demonstration matches were well under way.  He seemed very relaxed and encouraged the signing of autographs.
The Burghfield pavillion was officially opened by John Madejski on 3rd September.
