John Maitland was born in 1616 at Lethington, near the burgh of Haddington in East Lothian (now Lennoxlove).
Maitland remained with the royalists for the remainder of the Civil War and was one of those Scots who, like the Earl of Leven and David Leslie, supported Charles II's coronation at Scone and his attempt to retrieve his father's throne in 1650.
The most lasting monument to the Duke of Lauderdale and to his accumulation of wealth is Thirlestane Castle in the Scottish Borders.
