  John Malcolm Patterson - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
John Malcolm Patterson (born September 27, 1921) is an American politician who was the forty-ninth Governor of Alabama, from 1959 to 1963.
John Patterson replaced his father on the Democratic ticket in a special election, and was elected to the post of Attorney General.
Patterson was defeated in a 1966 run for governor by Lurleen Wallace, ran unsuccessfully for the post of Chief Justice of the State Supreme Court in 1972, and was appointed to the State Court of Criminal Appeals in 1984, where he remained until his retirement in 1997.

Governor Patterson held the U.S. Marshals, sent as a means of federal intervention and to escort Martin Luther King to a rally, responsible for the riots that occurred on the 21st.
John Patterson’s basic philosophy regarding the Freedom Riders was that they were outside agitators, illegitimate users of interstate travel, without a true destination in their trips from town to town, and above all, troublemakers who were in violation of Alabama state law.

Old John’s wife’s name is lost to us, (although he was married at the writing of his will in 1789) and her name is not mentioned in the tax lists, as white women were not considered ’taxables.’ His four slaves in that year were all taxables.
No Pattersons were called to testify though many of the Patterson clan were in the immediate area; perhaps the McPhersons’ Patterson cousins were all dead, living in other counties or had moved west in the migrations taking place at the time of the proceedings.
John and Lovdie eventually settled in the Philadelphus area of Robeson County, NC, and are buried at Philadelphus Presbyterian Church cemetery.

John Finlayson and Jennet Patterson McDonald were also the parents of Neill Archibald McDonald, born July 24,1869 in Moore County.

Malcom PATTERSON aged 67, born in North Carolina, states he moved from North Carolina to Wilson County Tenn. He fought in the Creek Indian War of 1813 and received bounty land.
John LOKEY, a resident of Franklin County, states that he married the second child of Martha HOLT and his wife is now 62 years of age and they have great-grandchildren who are the great great grandchildren of Martha HOLT.
